The Carbine Artillery Martini Metford MkI was a conversion from Martini Henry IC1 Artillery Carbine and the Pattern was sealed 2.5.1892. This carbine was only made as a pattern. It had a centre barrel band and plain ramped foresight, later pattern sealed 17.6.1893 did carry foresight wings and sighting to 1400 yards, however it never made production.
The MMAC1 was succeeded with the MMACII, which was a conversion from Martini Henry MkII Rifle
The barrel, nose cap and fore end are special to the MMAC carbine, and the Carbine has a new pattern breech block. Orders were placed at Enfield for 2500 and 250 arms respectively. 100 were supplied with longer butt extensions. The MMAC.II has the forend wood is attached with a cross pin. There is no middle band, but the fore end is held into place with a “rigby” type nosecap to fit the P1888 sword bayonet.
Sight is a long pattern leaf sight with up to 2000 yards graduation.
A cleaning rod, 12.5” long has a tapped end for an extended .303” jag with a head of the type fitted on the Lee Metford rifle MkII.
