Converted from Martini Henry MkII mother rifle, identical to the Martini Metford MkIII Cavalry Carbine, except fitted with 5 groove Enfield rifling, with a fractionally more raised sight cap and back sight. Notable is the “E” marking on the knocks form denoting Enfield rifling. Cocking indicator often changed from long to short (no apparent consistency).
The Mk1 Modified (alteration 22nd September 1903) has the fore -sight wings removed to accept the sprung pattern fore-sight protector.
The Mk1* has no clearing rod channel or rod, omitted 7th August 1899
The rear sight leaf is sighted to 2,000 yards.
