The MkI sword bayonet was introduced 1887, In 1891, the existing Enfield Martini experimental bayonets in store were converted to the more conventional MkI P1887 design,The long quillion was removed and the standard 1887 side mounting design was installed. The bayonets were nearly identical to the P1887 MkI sword, the blades were marked with the date of the conversion and the "C" designation. On the reverse the E-M designation was scored through.
