Introduced in List of Change 3615, with the Martini Henry IC1 Artillery carbine. the 25.75" blade was desgined ti give the same reach as a conventional Martini Henry rifle with bayonet fixed. The bayonet was designed as a multi-tool to assist the gunners, a close support sword, a bayonet and also a cutting device to saw bushes and branches when gun laying.
Manufacture of the bayonet was carried out by the RSAF Enfield and 2000 made under contract from the Wilkinson Company. Two models will be encountered, new made and conversions of the Pattern 1859 cutlass bayonets of which 1340 were adapted at Enfield. These may have German manufacture marks and W^D proofing.
Often the P1879 can be found with .450 IC1 muzzle diameter, .450 MH ACII diameter and .303 muzzle bushings.
