On 30th March 1876 LOC 2952, the “Gauge action”, was introduced, listed officially in the Enfield production figures as a “Skeletal Action”, Between 1876 & 1882, Enfield produced 1519 “Gauge actions”, and was a vital piece of the armourers equipment. The Gauge Action was a cut away breech, with the all the mechanics exposed, being dimensionally and mechanically perfect, the gauge gave the facility to install a suspected faulty part and test its integrity directly it in the gauge for irregularity. Once it had been tested, and the suspect component identified, it could then be adjusted in accordance with the Instructions for Armourers, alternatively if it was beyond repair replaced with a spare.
