Rifles and Carbines that had been withdrawn from service, often were used as drill arms, and were classed as "unserviceable". The mark resembles two capital "R" back to back. Frequently arms were prevented from firing by having a saw cut across the barrel, the firing pin ground level, and, a 1" (25mm) nail hammered into the pin hole from the rear and ground flat.
